Checking the catfish is useful to identify their health and growth. Here is how to observe the catfish:
A. Catch a few fish from the pond as a sample.
B. Weigh them and measure the length and check if the fish have any disease.
A few diseases that normally occur in catfish:
a White spot
This particular disease is marked by white spots on the body, head and gill. The catfish’s body looks pale and too slimy.
Catfish also experience some kind of itch and therefore rubs its body to the edge of the pond, sometimes until it bleeds.
Sometimes catfish also has trouble breathing and then die over time.
White spot’s prevention and treatment:
Spread salt in the pond where there is catfish with white spot disease.
b. Fungus and …kutu air
This disease is marked by white fine threads that looks like cotton on catfish’s body. The catfish will become pale and thinner, then it will die over time.
Or the catfish’s body looks darker/blackish and the skin is not smooth because it is losing too much mucus, and sometimes it also comes with a bleeding and open wound.
Catfish usually swims very weakly, has shortness of breath and comes to the surface a lot or hanging on the water surface.

Prevention and treatment:
1. Soak all the tools in disinfectant solution (PK).
2. Add low dosage of antibiotics (0.5 – 1 ppm) to the fish distribution or storage media.
3. Try to keep the fish body from getting wounded during harvesting or while on delivery.
